![]() ![]() ![]() It’s a shame Psyonix’s plans got caught up in the legal battle between Epic Games and Apple, but with so much allegedly in the works for mobile in the time ahead, it would appear that Rocket League is gearing up big time to rocket boost big time into one of its final unexplored frontiers: the world of mobile gaming. Rocket League Next will debut in alpha and beta testing on mobile, but the goal seems to be to consolidate all core Rocket League game launching and play into one ecosystem with cross-play supported between mobile, console, and PC platforms. Rocket League Next isn’t so much a crafted-for-mobile experience so much as it is a new next-generation client which will hand the operation of Rocket League on all platforms, including available PC and console options. The other seems to be an unannounced project called Rocket League Next. "Rocket League '2D'" is almost certainly referring to Rocket League Sideswipe: a 2.5D mobile version of Rocket League revealed back in March 2021. Although it’s called “Rocket League ‘2D’” in the slide, Rocket League Sideswipe was announced back in March 2021 and features a 2.5D gameplay experience in which players view and operate a Rocket League game from a side view, featuring floating vertical goals. Plus, since matches are shorter and feature fewer players, cross-platform play would probably have been impossible anyway. With Rocket League becoming free-to-play last year, one might have expected the full game to eventually come to mobile devices, but reworking the controls for that would likely have made it much more difficult to play. Psyonix says the title will feature controls that are easy to learn, regardless of whether you've played the original or not. Rocket League Sideswipe also retains the heavy customization elements of the original, with different bodies, wheels, boost trails, and more to choose from. Both the typical Soccar mode and Hoops mode can be played here, but in order to add some challenge to the former, goals are now raised from the ground, so scoring a goal isn't as simple as just pushing the ball forward. Aside from those changes, the heart of Rocket League gameplay is still prominent here. ![]()
